Daynote - Fri 20th Sep 2024

A blurb from author Robert Rutherford which reads 'One of the most polished, assured debuts I've read in recent years. A kill
I met Rob at Bloody Scotland and he was a bloody nice bloke

September weather has properly set in after a few days of unseasonable sunshine and heat - as evidenced by the soaking wet cat that woke me up this morning. One of those mornings where I have no memory of turning off my alarm and just wake up late, so I feel behind all day.

BUT - it's Friday. Also, two people told me yesterday (independently) how much they enjoy reading my daynotes, so I am coming to today's post with RENEWED VIGOUR.

ON DECK: No walk this morning due to the late wakeup, but I did get 534 words of the PROJECT SCARLET sample written, allowing me to drift gently over the 11k mark. Then immediately drift back under it as I did some line edits and cuts and cleanup. So it goes. But I'm in a good spot for next week.

LISTENING: More Mile 22 this morning.

WATCHING: The next episode of SLOW HORSES last night. It continues to be absolutely fantastic, and to make interesting minor tweaks and changes to the order of events and the participants from the novel. I've always been interested in film and TV adaptations of my favourite books and the choices they make in the adaptation process, but with my news being announced last week about the TV option on A RELUCTANT SPY, I'm particularly attuned to it at the moment.

READING: Man, I cannot get over how effectively the ending of NINTH LIFE is pulling together a bunch of narrative threads and framing. Just chef's kiss for gorgeously written, allusive, brain-stretching SF that also exists within a compelling pursuit thriller and at least three nested perspectives. Masterful.

UP NEXT: Busy weekend, then plunging back into SCARLET drafting for the whole of next week. If I can nail the draft by the end of the week and get some editing in on Thursday or Friday I will be very happy.
