Book cake and tech nerdery.

Authors Marco Rinaldi and Tariq Ashkanani in conversation at the launch for THE MIDNIGHT KING

No walk this morning, thanks to a late (but very enjoyable) night at the launch for Tariq Ashkanani's THE MIDNIGHT KING, which was a great event. Plus there was book cake, which is always amazing.

ON DECK: Crawled my way to -594 words this morning after getting up late, but on the plus side I got my Supernote editing notes back! More details on that below.

TOOLS AND PROCESS: Supernote's superb support team came back overnight with some extra information that helped me figure out the source of the issue - essentially an accidental overwrite of the ePub file with a broken version that then wasn't synced until I turned on wifi to download the new update. Once I knew that, I was able to recover the correct version from my Dropbox version history, re-upload it with a new name and then make a copy of the annotation files and finally get my notes back, correctly overlaid on a new file. Phew!

Huge thanks to the Supernote for the support, and I've added a mea culpa to my original very irritated post. The timing of the update and the dodgy file was coincidental, but seemed like the cause at the time. Never mind, all is saved!

LISTENING: The Bloody Scotland podcast continues to be really, really excellent. Episode 3 is out, featuring Denise Mina and debut author Jenny Morris (THE ETHICAL GUIDE TO MURDER). I really love this format.

WATCHING: Again, nothing on telly last night since I was in town, but yesterday I did run across this trailer for the movie PRIMITIVE WAR, which appears to be Platoon crossed with Jurassic Park. Which... sounds like it could be awful or amazing.

READING: Now I've got my notes back on PROJECT SCARLET, I'm forging ahead on that. And I got into the first chapter of THE MIDNIGHT KING on the train home, which has a deeply creepy opening. Good stuff.

LINK: An excellent piece from Maris Kreizman on what it means to be a 'good author' in a publishing sense. Hat tip to Erin Hardee for the link.

UP NEXT: Off into town tomorrow for the ESFF write-in in the morning, then a gaming session with friends in the evening. I'm hoping to get a really solid couple of hours of editing in at least so I can get ahead of my plan a bit, but we'll see how it goes. Onward!
